Yellow Mongoose:The Story

This, little devil above, is what is called a Yellow Mongoose. Now the story behind the title for my blog begins months ago when I was still in the UK. Now, before coming to South Africa, I reckoned I didn't need any vaccinations. However, just two weeks before my flight I go to see the nurse, who puts the fear of God into me. She tells me that I must have a rabies vaccination, and that I cannot go without one or I will surely die a painfully slow and horrible death. Now, of course, I emailed Aly in a blind panic inquiring as to whether I need these jabs or not.

She says no.

So, all was calm......until one night.

See, now to re write this, I realise I may sound a tad paranoid. But that nurse (stupid Carol the nurse) had seriously freaked me out. So, I was sleeping in bed with the two cats Baby and Jinx. With my window open. I awaken the next day to find two teeny scratches on my hand. Now, I cant remember if I got these scratches the day before or if they have appeared in the night. My first frantic thought was that a wild cat had gotten in and scratched me.

I rushed to Aly, absolutely certain I was going to start frothing at the mouth that second, where I was greeted with little sympathy and much laughter.

"Now, Rosie, lets talk rabies" Aly says the next day at school. "there have been six reported cases of rabies in the whole on Mpumalanga in the last thirteen years, four dogs, a box eared fox, and a yellow mongoose, now which of these do you think came in through your window?"

And thus, the legend of the Yellow Mongoose was born. I am still teased about it to this day.............

SOUTH AFRICA, IT'S NOT FOR SISSIES
